Chamber Foundation’s “Clays Classic” is Friday
The Third Annual “Clays Classic,” sponsored by S&T Bank, will take place this Friday at Hillendale Hunt Club in Sinking Valley. This Chamber Foundation event will feature competition from among more than eighty shooters. “We currently have twenty teams of four shooters each signed-up and ready to go,” explained Barry D’Andrea of Saleme Insurance, chair of the Clays Classic Planning Committee. “We actually have room for a couple of additional teams or even for individual shooters.” Participants will have the opportunity to practice in the morning and take part in a pre-event competition. The Classic itself will begin at 1:00 p.m. over the 17-station course. An awards dinner will follow. Proceeds from the Clays Classic benefits a number of Chamber Foundation programs including Leadership Blair County, BASICS and Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. For further information, contact Cindy Cessna at 943-8151 or E-mail her at ccessna@blairchamber.com

Looking for Affordable Health Insurance for Your Business?
As many Chamber-member businesses consider renewal notices for their corporate health insurance plans, The Blair County Chamber is offering a viable option. The “ChamberChoice” program, which The Chamber has offered to its members for several years, has recently introduced a new product that can lower rates while offering a wider array of additional benefits. The MyChoice program offers a variety of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield options as well as discounted dental, vision and disability plans, a wellness program, integrated clinical services, electronic billing and, in most cases, no administrative fees. To learn more about this program, a meeting has been scheduled on Wednesday, May 31st from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center. There is no cost to attend. Call The Chamber at 943-8151 for reservations since seating is limited.

Kanzleiter Resigns Board Position
Lou Kanzleiter of PREIT/Logan Valley Mall, a member of the Chamber Board of Directors for the past three years and currently Vice-President of the Promotion/Events Division, has resigned his Board position. Kanzleiter has recently accepted a position as general manager of a PREIT shopping mall in Norfolk, Virginia. “It will be very difficult for me to leave this area and the many friends that my wife and I have made here,” he noted. “I have enjoyed my time on the Chamber Board and wish everyone the best as they continue to work on behalf of the business community.” The Chamber’s Nominating Subcommittee will submit recommendations on a replacement to Chamber President Joe Sheetz.

Chamber Board Approves Women In Business Committee
The Chamber’s intention of more adequately addressing the business needs of women in Blair County received a shot in the arm when the Chamber Board of Directors approved the formation of a Women In Business Committee at its May meeting. The committee will survey women in all capacities to ascertain educational and networking needs and will then work with the Chamber staff to address those needs. Amy Seltzer of Seltzer Financial Strategies was elected chair of the Women In Business Steering Committee. Andrea Cohen of the Blair Companies was elected vice-chair.

Legislative Priorities Receive Unanimous Approval
The Chamber’s legislative priorities for the remainder of 2006 have been finalized and will be published in a document to be distributed to more than 200 of Blair County’s elected officials at a special reception set for June 15th at the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum. “It’s important that our elected officials at the local, state and federal levels understand the issues that are important to business,” acknowledged Debra Dellaposta, chair of The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee. “We’ll be asking for their support as we intensify our advocacy efforts.” The Chamber Board of Directors unanimously approved the legislative priorities and they now stand as the official policy of the organization.

Imler Named Chair of Chamber Safety Committee
Don Imler of Hoss’s Steak & Sea House has been selected to chair The Chamber’s Safety/Risk Management Committee for the next two years. Imler succeeds Bob Low of Mountain Top Technologies whose term as chair expired in May.

NPC, Blair Companies Step-Up as Advocacy Sponsors
When The Chamber’s Business Advocacy Dinner is held on June 5th, two local businesses will have stepped-up as major sponsors. NPC, Inc. will be the Premier sponsor of the event. The Blair Companies will be the Reception sponsor. “We’re extremely grateful to NPC and the Blair Companies as well as the many other businesses who help us, through their sponsorships, to make this the prestigious event that we believe it needs to be,” explained Chamber Executive Director Joe Hurd. For ticket information on the dinner, contact The Chamber at 943-8151.

Wessel Donation Benefits Shriner’s Hospital
As Breakfast Club sponsor during May, Wessel & Company threw-in an added feature by making attendees eligible to receive a $200 check, payable to the winner’s favorite charity. That winner turned-out to be Jaffa Shrine Potentate Donald Sharer. His charity, to no one’s surprise, was Shriner’s Hospital. “We’re happy to be able to make a contribution on Mr. Sharer’s behalf,” noted Wessel’s Managing Partner, Bob Eyer. “The great things that are being done at Shriner’s Hospital every day, particularly for young children, make that facility a very worthy recipient.”

Keller, Campbell Named to Chamber Foundation Board
Joe Keller of Keller Engineers and Craig Campbell of Hoss’s Steak & Sea House have been named to the Blair County Chamber Foundation Board of Directors. Keller is a former member of the Chamber’s Board; Campbell is a member of the current Leadership Blair County Adult Class. The two new board members replace Cynthia Smith of Hoss’s and Tom Patten of Sheetz, Inc. whose terms have expired.

Date Changed for June’s “Business After Hours”
The date has changed for The Chamber’s next Business After Hours. The event, to be held at “The Beautiful Bathroom” by Folcarelli Supply, has now been scheduled for Tuesday, June 27 th. More information will follow in the coming weeks.
